How a Tone cluster is built

A Tone cluster — written cluster (e.g. Ccluster) — is a 3-note chord: three adjacent notes struck together — a half step and a whole step stacked right on top of the root, with no 3rd, 5th, or 7th at all. Every cluster chord — in any of the 12 keys — is built the exact same way, by counting semitones to the right from a root note:

  1. The starting note — this note names the chord.
  2. Count 1 semitone up from the root — the minor 2nd, right next door to the root.
  3. Count 1 more semitone up from the minor 2nd (2 semitones from the root) — the major 2nd.
Example — Ccluster: start on C, count 1 semitone right to reach D♭, count 1 semitone more to reach D. C‑D♭‑D is the Ccluster chord.
A tone cluster is not meant to resolve or function like a normal chord — it is a percussive hit, usually struck briefly for a dramatic gospel accent rather than sustained as a harmony. (A wider version, spanning a major 3rd — 0, 2, 4 — is common too.)
